Video game collection done easy and right!
Ive been a user of this app prior to Sort It! Purchasing it several years ago (believe it was called "iCollect" at the time.
Was very happy with iCollect, and when SI bought them, there was some strong resistance- myself included. It began when people had to repurchase the app, which put many people off. Them having my database already via iC made my decision somewhat easy, and hoped it would be the only hitch in the transfer.
Unfortunately, it wasnt. Several months later, a flood damaged their servers and due to faulty backup plans, many people lost their collection databases.
In an effort to please the now furious customers, SI offered everyone that was a current customer free versions of their upcoming desktop app that synced with your collections, as well as gave you another way to add and edit your databases.
Many people never received their free keys for the desktop apps (again, myself included) once they were released, and I followed the hubbub on Facebook for a time, with no real resolution other than some indication that the time to collect on your free desktop app had passed.
So... Why the five stars?
To be honest, I just love the app- and, keep reading, as I was in for a pleasant surprise today, which Ill get to soon.
I have a movie collection of over 1,000 movies and over 1,200 video games; I keep both the apps SI makes for each of these on my phone.
The apps are incredibly handy. With so many movies & games, I may spot an older title on an incredible deal- and theres times I honestly am unaware if its a part of our collection. Adding titles is a snap with its bar code photo option, and if that doesnt work, its simple to either search by title, bar code, or just add the title from scratch if it isnt in their database- and Ill stress that its an odd chance they dont have it on file.
Since the listed issues that transpired from the beginning of SI taking over these apps, everything has settled. Frequent updates have kept it up-to-date, titles are rarely missing, and I finally had an experience with customer service today, which was absolutely fantastic.
I had emailed their support regarding an incorrect title/ bar code combination (no worries, you can hand edit to keep your collection correct, I just was passing info along so they could get it corrected in their system) over the weekend, and upon our correspondence, I mentioned that I had never received the desktop key from several years ago in one of the messages. To my surprise, I received an email today, several years later, along with an apology and a link to download the desktop app. When I saw the link originally, I saw "purchase" in the link, so thought they may have just sent me to the store site to buy it. Upon clicking the link, I was taken to the download site that installed the app to my PC free of charge. Not only was it the collection app for the movies (where I had contacted) it was a "complete" collection app, including video games, books, Legos, comic books, along with every other category they offer.
While SI may have gotten off to a bumpy start at the beginning, its been smooth, uninterrupted sailing for us that do serious collecting. Cant recall any major issues since the database crash several years ago, and for people with "collection addiction" like myself, thats a huge boon. The fact that the apps offer so much in the way of organizing your collections, editing everything (even if its something "found" in their database thats incorrect) and a clean, simple, easy interface makes the apps from Sort It! Absolute must-haves.
(PS: you may also access your database from your internet browser- its fun to occasionally show off your collection with a link to it from your social media of choice!)
